acrylic on canvas, 24” x 36”, (framed 30” x 42”), 2025, Chilliwack, BC
This painting of sunflowers is an excellent example of what happens when you use backlighting to illuminate your still life set up. Backlighting is when you put your source of light behind the object you are going to paint. The reflection of light off the sides of the stems of the sunflowers, and the shadow cast in the foreground by the vase, are perfectly rendered. The background, with the appearance of crushed velvet, also appears to capture the light between the vase and the backdrop. It was captured with a larger foilage brush.
